Beginners Guide To Being A Game Streamer! (Baby Steps)

About myself: First I will tell you that I'm not a pro-streamer who made partner or has sponsorships at this current time however, I am an affiliate. I myself feel I am a "journeymen" streamer with a decent amount of experience under my belt to be able to get you started. As I am learning, I would like to share my knowledge with you on how to succeed!

Related to this tutorial: There is a starting point for everything. This is the second installment of my streamer tutorial series. If you haven't read the first article, please click here: (Learning to Crawl

About this guide: This guide is intended to encourage you and get you more refined with your stream and content. If you've read my first article, let's do the next step and ramp up your content. I believe absolutely anyone can be a streamer! Let's start taking some confident baby steps!

Get Excited, Get Obsessed!

Like anything new, it's exciting and a little scary. Whether you are streaming for fun or streaming to eventually reach an affiliate or partner position you need to be excited about your new hobby for it to be enjoyable and to progress.

Obsession sounds bad, but when it comes to yourself, your hobbies, your skills, or just overall self-improvement I say it's good to get obsessed! Use it! Take your obsession and turn it into a passion! Start writing down your ideas that float into your head and expand on them! Your excitement and obsession will ultimately be your muse and motivation!

Set up an "about page"

So, you may have been streaming for a while and reached the point where it's time to spiffy things up! I feel that setting up your "about page" is one of the most important first steps to being a regular streamer. It allows viewers to see who you are, what you're about, and provides them useful information about you and your content.

Another benefit of an "about page" is to drive traffic. The page makes your stream look more appealing and if you have social media, a business, merchandise, or a YouTube, it will be publicly shown and drive traffic to your other content.

What should be on my "about page"?

What most streamers have are panels. These are sections that tell a little bit of information about your stream, yourself, and really anything else you want to tell people when visiting your stream page. It also provides some flare. You start with a little introductory image like the following:

This is an introductory image

Next you add a description. Now you are all set. For a quick tutorial on how to set up your Twitch Panels, please click on my my YouTube tutorial here: Coming soon!

Spiffy up your stream page with a banner

While it isn't required, a banner can add some extra spiff-tacular-ness to your stream page! It provides a background to the top of your stream page. You can make it a collage about yourself, your stream, or just an image that makes you stand out. It doesn't need verbiage or need to be too intricate as it'll be mostly covered up by your intro video or past recordings (VODS)

Punctuality. Making a schedule

Back in my day, we had T.V. Guide, television scheduling on cable and satellite, or just overall knew when our favorite T.V. program were starting. Visiting a stream follows the same exact rules! Fans, supporters, friends, and family will want to know when you are on. Alerts are nice and all, but knowing your schedule will help people make time in their own busy schedules to visit you. Add this as one of your panels and stick to it. You'll notice a big difference in viewership.

Choosing A Bot

Get yourself a bot, get yourself a bot, GET YOURSELF A BOT! What is a bot? Simply put, automation. A bot is program that runs in the background and allows chat games, moderation, special commands, and a huge variety of other functions. While they aren't super important, they are useful, and they can and usually will add to the entertainment of your stream. There are a LOT of bots out there so it is difficult to choose what is best for you. Here are a few that are friendly with multiple platforms including Twitch, Youtube, and Facebook. Ranked from best to not so best, these are the bots I prefer:

  1. Streamlabs
  2. Streamelements
  3. Nightbot
With a bot, you can have chat games, interactive points (pre-affiliate channel points essentially), and you would be able to set up redeemables. Additionally, you can add security to block links, bad words, etc. Lastly, you can create commands to advertise others, advertise yourself (automatically), and have automated messages pup up in chat. Most importantly, they can manage your alerts for follows, donations, and so on. Maybe another tutorial on how to set that up another time.

Walking full stride

You are on your way to the next step! In my next tutorial you will be ramping things up and walking full stride to your path to affiliate! Again, these things take time, but these are some very basic first steps every streamer should take. For some, it can take more time than others, but a key thing to remember, have fun! Don't stop having fun, this is a hobby. Start with a crawl and shoot for the stars.
